Jonnu Smith, TE, Miami Dolphins
ADP 189.4, TE25, Round 15.
Sixty years from now, I will tell my grandkids about the year that Jonnu Smith “Arthur Smithed” the dreams of GMs who drafted Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts. Jonnu Smith was more annoying than Skylar from Breaking Bad.
“Jonnu Smith is a YAC monster”-Mike McDaniels.
Signed to a modest 4.2 million-dollar-a-year contract, Jonnu Smith has the traits, role, and offense to outperform his ADP if things break right.
Jonnu Smith is fast and on a team that has historically played fast. The Dolphins have never had a TE with Jonnu’s receiving skill set. Jonnu has always been undersized for the positions while exhibiting Konami Code athleticism. His RAS score is 8.29, and his 40-time is 4.62. This speed was displayed in 2023 when Jonnu had the fastest TE play of the season. Jonnu Smith is the biggest receiving starter despite being undersized for the position.
In 2023, Jonnu Smith earned .20 targets per route run (TPRR) in the not-elite but serviceable category with guys like Pitts, Goedert, and Okonkwo. However, what makes Jonnu interesting is his ability to create YAC. His 7.42 yards after the catch per reception (YAC/Rec) was 4th for all TEs with at least 150 routes. Jonnu Smith is a super fast TE on a super fast offense who can earn targets and create yards.
Of course, the “YAC Monster” in the room is that Durham Smyth ran 57.5% of the routes at the TE position. This has led to a team with a paltry 50 targets for all TEs in 2023. With the signing of Jonnu Smith and Odell Beckham Jr., the team is attempting to diversify its passing tree. Jonnu Smith’s size, speed, and ability to create YAC create an opportunity with a ceiling as the 3rd receiving option for the Dolphins. There is an argument that the Dolphins NEED Jonnu Smith and Beckham Jr. to be a factor in overcoming those elite AFC teams late.
Smith is an excellent late-round pairing with Mark Andrews’ bye since the Dolphins play the Jets in week 14, who allowed the 13th-most points to TEs in 2023. Other decent bye-week coverage matchups are for the midtier guys, Ferguson, Njoku, and Bowers.
All in all, Jonnu Smith is a screaming value at his current ADP. He has the rare Triforce combination of speed/size, opportunity, and YAC abilities to be a fantasy football factor. He should have a few spike weeks in his outcomes on a team that plays fast. Jonnu Smith is the second highest-rated Konami Code late-round TE and an absolute must-draft in a Tua stack or a Cleveland Browns bringback. We are currently drafting Jonnu ahead of Noah Fant, although just barely.
